8 Things I Learned From my Stay in Ghana

1. Make sure you’re up to date on all your vaccines for mosquito born illnesses and make sure to take your malaria medicine everyday

Here the thing no one tells you about mosquitos in Ghana or any place tropical for that matter. No matter how much repellant you use, you will still get bit. I used repellants with 40% DEET, ones with all natural ingredients and one from Mexico I’m pretty sure isn’t legal in the states. The result was the same, I got mosquito bites.

Off to Ghana: Day 2

I have to get into the habit of actually posting things that write.

My journey started off with a 13 hour trip to Addis Ababa which is a hub for Ethiopian Airlines. When I boarded the plane I was greeted by the purser who offered me the choice of champagne, water, or orange juice and a selection of magazines. I chose the champagne and a Time magazine. At my seat was a pillow, blanket and amenity kit. I was seated at 4J.

Hey, I like to Fly

I’m going to be traveling for 10 days, visiting 8 cities, and 7 different airports. I’ll be in Germany for Oktoberfest and also visiting Ecuador. How did this crazy trip come about?

Well I was supposed to go to Europe in August for 10 days. I booked first class travel using Alaska Airline miles. In June a great deal to fly to Frankfurt from the west coast for under $500 was too good to pass up. So I cancelled my original trip and booked this one. I was scheduled to come back to the States on 9/20 and fly back to Seattle on 9/21.

I’m Going to Ghana…How Should I Get There?

In October I’ll be traveling to Ghana to do some volunteer work. Since I have a ton of miles in a variety of accounts I have many options. My only requirement is that there be lie flat seating, so at minimum I’m looking at business class. I’m only looking at 1-way to Ghana as I will be flying back to the states on Emirates no matter what.

Out of all the options, I’ve narrowed down my choices to 4 different airlines. They are Delta, South African Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and Emirates. Here is a comparison of the routes, the cost, the cost using mileage currency and any notes.

Which route do you think I should take?

My Year in Review

A couple of people wanted to know my travel stats for 2015. Here they are:

Miles Flown: 39,757

Flights taken: 27

Airport Visited the Most (Outside of SeaTac) : ATL, BWI (3 each)

Airline Flown the most: Alaska (16 segments)

Number of times Upgraded : 8 (7 on Alaska, 1 on Delta)

Airports Visited: 11

I’m Not Crazy, My Mother had me test but even she’s starting to question the results

I recently got back from my vacation to Costa Rica. Instead of going on American’s or Delta’s website and inputting SEA->SJO like a normal person, I ended up booking 6 different legs, on 2 different airlines. Here are the legs for the trip:

SEA->BWI on Alaska
BWI->ATL on Delta
ATL->SJO on Delta
SJO->ATL on Delta
ATL->BWI on Delta
BWI->SEA on Alaska

How I flew to Panama for Free

2 months ago Delta and American ran an awesome sale to Panama from most of their hubs. As my birthday was coming up, I took the opportunity to book the trip. My Panama vacation was great and I definitely plan on going back. (I’ll talk more about my trip in a later post). The fact that I was able to go to Panama was amazing enough but what surprises people the most is that the trip cost me nothing.
