Today I received an email from Alaska announcing that any excess elite qualifying miles will be able to be rolled over into 2017. Here is the text of the email:

Earn status with rollover miles.
Here’s another reason to choose Alaska for all your 2016 flying – the trips you take this year can help you hold on to your elite status even longer. With this exclusive opportunity, each elite-qualifying mile you earn for Alaska Airlines flights beyond your tier requirement this year will go toward your 2017 qualifying miles.

This is obviously in response to Delta which already lets you rollover any excess elite qualifying miles into the next year. A couple of things that stick out. It seems to be targeted and only miles earned on Alaska marketed and operated flights rollover.

*Only Mileage Plan™ members who receive this offer directly from Alaska Airlines via email are eligible to participate. The difference, if any, between the number of miles flown by an eligible member on Alaska Airlines-marketed and operated flights (AS1-999, 2000-2999 or 3300-3499) in 2016 and the number of miles required for the highest 2017 elite status level achieved by the eligible member as of December 31, 2016, will be applied towards 2018 elite status qualification.

I’ll update the post when more details are posted.
